Philadelphia car accident lawyer explains what drivers need to know

Winter can be a dangerous time for drivers. In an instant, snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice can make roads and highways treacherous. It’s no wonder so many weather-related car accidents happen in winter.

Many of these accidents cause serious injuries or fatalities. And while these crashes can happen anywhere, certain states are more dangerous than others during winter. This includes Pennsylvania, which was recently named the second deadliest state for winter driving.

ValuePenguin conducted the winter driving study. The website analyzed weather-related winter car accident data for every state between 2013 and 2017. The company then published its findings and statewide rankings. Below, you can learn more about this study and why car accidents often occur in winter.

Why is winter so dangerous for Pennsylvania drivers?

Unsurprisingly, the five deadliest states in the ValuePenguin winter driving study are all northern states where winters can be harsh and treacherous. Michigan earned the title as the deadliest winter driving state (282 deaths) followed by Pennsylvania, with 197 winter driving fatalities between 2013 and 2017.

According to the study, Pennsylvania averages about 40 deaths each year due to weather-related car accidents in winter. In particular, the state’s two largest cities – Pittsburgh (6 winter motor vehicle deaths on average each year) and Philadelphia (4 deaths) – have the most winter-related fatal car accidents.

Certain highways in Pennsylvania have more weather-related car accidents than others each winter as well. The most dangerous highways are I-80 (which has 12 fatalities on average each year due to winter-related accidents) and I-78 (which has 6 fatalities on average each year), according to the study.

What are common causes of winter driving accidents?

Weather-related winter car accidents happen for many different reasons. Often, it’s because the at-fault driver failed to take hazardous weather conditions seriously and did not adjust their driving due to weather conditions. Examples include:

  • Driving too fast during a snow or ice storm.
  • Tailgating or driving too close to another vehicle, resulting in a rear-end accident.
  • Poor visibility due to not properly cleaning snow or ice off the windshield.
  • Bald tires with poor traction in the snow or ice.
  • Illegally passing another vehicle (including snowplows), resulting in a head-on collision or another type of serious accident.
  • Distracted driving, including talking on a cellphone or texting while driving.

Winter driving accidents happen for many other reasons. In each case, injured drivers or passengers need to take their accident seriously right away. Otherwise, they might not get the money they rightfully deserve for medical bills, vehicle repairs, replacement income and other accident-related expenses.

Why should I hire a lawyer?
